Struggling with self-motivation? You’re not alone. Some days it feels like you’re on top of the world, tackling projects with ease. On other days, even getting out of bed feels insurmountable.

The good news is that self-motivation is a skill you can learn, and it can transform how you approach tasks and live your life.

The Science of Motivation and ADHD

Motivation stems from dopamine, a neurotransmitter crucial for focus, task initiation, working memory, and the sense of reward we feel after completing a task. For those with ADHD, lower dopamine levels can make self-motivation a challenge. Without enough dopamine, your brain struggles to hold onto the steps required for tasks, connect them to your goals, and initiate action.

Here’s the tricky part: Dopamine is generated through anticipation of something enjoyable or rewarding. Stress, anxiety, or negative emotions can block this process, creating a cycle of inaction and frustration.
